24-HOUR AMBULATORY PH AND IMPEDANCE MONITORING

The 24-hour ambulatory pH and impedance monitoring test is a state-of-the-art diagnostic procedure used to evaluate and manage symptoms related to acid reflux, non-acid reflux, and other gastroesophageal conditions. This minimally invasive test provides valuable insights into the frequency and nature of reflux episodes, helping your gastroenterologist develop a targeted treatment plan.

What is 24-Hour Ambulatory pH and Impedance Monitoring?

This procedure involves placing a thin, flexible catheter through the nose into the oesophagus. The catheter is equipped with sensors that measure:

  • pH Levels: To detect the presence and severity of acid reflux.
  • Impedance Changes: To identify non-acidic reflux episodes by tracking the movement of liquid, gas, or air in the oesophagus.

The test continuously records data for 24 hours while you go about your normal activities, including eating, drinking, and sleeping.

Why is This Test Performed?

We may recommend this test if you have symptoms such as:

  • Persistent heartburn or chest pain
  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Regurgitation
  • Unexplained chronic cough or throat irritation
  • Suspected gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Evaluation before or after anti-reflux surgery

This test helps determine:

  • If symptoms are caused by acid or non-acid reflux.
  • The relationship between symptoms and reflux events.
  • The effectiveness of previous treatments or medications.

What to Expect During the Test

  • Catheter Placement: A trained professional will insert the catheter through your nose into your oesophagus. This may cause mild discomfort initially.
  • Recorder Setup: The catheter is connected to a small, portable recorder worn around your waist or shoulder to capture data.
  • Daily Activities: You will maintain your usual routine, eating meals and noting any symptoms on a provided diary or device.
  • Completion: After 24 hours, you will return to have the catheter removed, and the data will be analysed.

Preparing for the Test

  • Avoid eating or drinking at least 4-6 hours before the test.
  • Stop taking acid-reducing medications if instructed by your doctor.
  • Wear comfortable clothing on the day of the procedure.

What Do the Results Mean?

The recorded data will provide insights into the frequency, duration, and nature of reflux episodes. This information enables your gastroenterologist to:

  • Confirm or rule out GERD.
  • Distinguish between acid and non-acid reflux.
  • Tailor a personalised treatment plan based on the findings.

If you experience persistent reflux symptoms or suspect GERD, please request a consultation and we will determine if 24-hour pH and impedance monitoring is right for you.
